Pilot Suicide: EgyptAir Flight 990 (1999)

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 0042 MYT on Saturday, 8 March 2014 and was expected to arive at Beijing Capital International Airport at 0630 MYT. However, the aircraft never arrived.

About 40 minutes into the flight, MH370 diverted westward and after crossing peninsula Malaysia flew north-west towards the Andaman Sea, and then turned south. The flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean. No-one knows why. No-one survived, so the incident could be described as murder-suicide. Thankfully few commercial passenger flights have ended tragically by pilot suicide, and in instances other than MH370 wreckage and flight recorders have been recovered.

EgyptAir Flight 990

EgyptAir Flight 990 is cited as an example of pilot suicide. The aircraft was a Boeing 767 operated by EgyptAir. Flight 990 was a scheduled passenger flight from Los Angeles to Cairo, with 203 passengers and 14 crew. The distance required a re-fuelling stop in New York International Airport, and the duration required two flight crews.

On October 31, 1999 EgyptAir Flight 990 departed the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York City, climbed to 33,000 feet and suddenly started a steep dive, reaching near supersonic speeds. Attempts to control the aircraft were perhaps successful as it was slowed and after reaching 16,000 feet climbed up to 25,000 feet. But then it entered another dive which must have been absolutely terrifying, reached speeds which caused the aircraft to break apart, and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean about 100 km south of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. There were no survivors.

Was this a case of pilot-suicide? The crash seems to have been caused by the actions of the First Officer, but as in similar incidents there was a reluctance to clearly state that the tragedy was deliberate.
